Despite their exhaustive study and contemplation in a host of synthetic sciences, host�guest chemistry involving ionic liquids remains in its infancy. For example, the widely-studied calixarene family of macrocyclic hosts have remained almost completely neglected as hosts for ionic liquid species. Among the calixarenes, pyrogallol[4]arenes have demonstrated a remarkable ability to construct a variety of captivating solid-state structures via both non-covalent interactions and coordination bonds, including the ability to self-organize into nanocapsular and nanotube-type entities as well as the capacity to act as host molecules. In this contribution, we present several interesting single-crystal X-ray diffraction determined structures of host�guest cocrystals comprising various pyrogallol[4]arenes and ionic liquids and discuss the prospects for ionic liquids opening a new page in crystal engineering within host�guest supramolecular chemistry.
