Olefin metathesis is used in a tremendous number of synthetic applications, including the development of experimental pharmaceuticals, new polymers, and the conversion of seed oils into valuable chemicals and materials. The most prominent olefin metathesis catalysts are based on ruthenium, a relatively expensive and heavy metal. Our group is interested in the development of olefin metathesis catalysts derived from abundant and innocuous transition metals. Toward this goal, we are exploring ways to support iron that may lead to the design of iron olefin metathesis catalysts. New bis-phosphinite PONOP iron complexes have been prepared and the coordination of iron to bis-phosphite PONOP pincer ligands has been studied. Additionally, methods to attach an alkylidene ligand on bis(imino)pyridine iron and bis-phosphinite PONOP iron fragments are being investigated. Details of the results related to these studies will be presented.
