Promoting the energetically uphill conversion of carbon dioxide to fuels represents an ideal strategy to store renewable energy including solar. Much focus has been directed at the design and synthesis of homogeneous molecular electrocatalysts for such transformations, however, interrogation of such systems is complicated by diffusion of both catalyst and substrate to an electrode surface. We have developed new methods to functionalize electrode supports to allow for heterogenation of molecular fuel forming catalysts. This process allows us to tailor inexpensive electrode interfaces with addressable molecular wires by taking advantage of a two-step functionalization strategy. We will present recent work dealing with the fabrication and electronic properties of these well-ordered interfaces and will demonstrate relevance to applications in electrocatalysis.
