The symposium 'Kinetics   and Mechanism in the Atmosphere' addresses a number of cutting edge issues in our understanding of atmospheric chemistry. This talk will describe the context of the environemntal probelms that motivate the research in the symposium and highlight some of the outstanding chemicla questions that willbe discussed over the course of the week.
