Novel bisphosphonate-containing monomers were synthesized for dental and bone targeted drug delivery applications. Monomers were synthesized from reaction of ethyl and t-butyl a-bromomethacrylates and tetraethyl 4-hydroxybutane-1,1-diyldiphosphonate. Thermal and photo-polymerizations of the monomers were investigated. Hydrolysis of the bisphosphonate groups of the homopolymers gave new bisphosphonic acid-containing polymers which showed great promise to bind HAP.
