JP-8 fuel is the focus of the U.S. Army's fuel processing research and development efforts because of its availability, transportation logistics, safe and high energy density.  The demand for hydrogen fuel is rapidly evolving for the Army's power generation, such as mobile, portable and stationary fuel cells.  The on-demand fuel reformation of JP-8 offers an energy dense hydrogen feedstock.  One of the primary challenges of making pure hydrogen is the removal of organic sulfur compounds in the liquid JP-8 fuel.  These sulfur compounds can poison reformer and fuel cell catalysts, even at parts per million levels.In this work, silver ions supported on silica monoliths are prepared and evaluated for the adsorptive desulfurization of JP-8 fuel; other silica-based adsorbent materials are also examined.  The adsorbents are tested with JP-8 fuel containing =400 ppmw sulfur under ambient conditions.  This presentation will focus on the preparation methods and the sulfur adsorption characteristics of these materials.
