This presentation will survey recent examples from our lab in which we have created low band gap materials based on cyclopentafused-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (CP-PAHs). We have prepared both small-molecule and polymeric variants that incorporate CP-PAH scaffolds.  Our synthetic strategy utilizes scalable processes to create halogenated CP-PAHs that can participate in a variety of palladium-catalyzed coupling chemistries.  This strategy allows easy modulation of the frontier orbital energies, and thus provides access to tunable materials. The application of these materials to photovoltaic devices will also be discussed.
