Supported-metal catalysts are used in many industrial applications, from automotive emissions control to the steam-reforming reaction. Metal-support interactions frequently play an integral role in providing activity in these systems and metal sintering is frequently a problem for high-temperature operation. To maximize the interactions between the metal and the active oxide, as well as prevent sintering of the metal particles, we have prepared Pd@ceria, core-shell particles and deposited these onto a functionalized-alumina support. These catalysts were then tested for a variety of reactions, including methane oxidation and steam reforming. It is shown that these materials have exceptional activity for methane oxidation, with impressive stability at high temperatures.
