An interest in new crystalline forms of matter is shared by both chemists and physicists. With the gradual shift of research on crystalline systems from industry to academia, new interdisciplinary funding programs are needed. I will discuss an effort by the National Research Council to assess the state of research in crystalline matter, its future promise and recommendations to support such research to ensure US competitiveness.
