The ability to create and manipulate within the same crystal lattice, ferromagnetism and semiconductivity in solid-state inorganic compounds, is very attractive and might result in new physical phenomena and novel applications such as the spintronic and spin-based information storage technologies. New classes of high Tc ferromagnetic semiconductors, MxPb4-xSb4Se10 and MPn2Se4 (M=Fe/Mn; Pn=Sb/Bi), containing ordered single-chain magnetic centers regularly spaced by semiconducting blocks were recently discovered in our group. Because multiple independent metal positions are available in these mixed-metal selenides, the structure and composition of the single-chain magnetic centers and the composition of the semiconducting framework can be altered independently allowing control over the ferromagnetism, and the type, density and mobility of charge carriers in the materials. We will attempt to correlate the ferromagnetism and semiconductivity of these systems to the atomic structure and composition of the magnetic chains, and to the alteration of charge carrier concentration within the semiconducting framework.
