The formation of new polar solid state materials is discussed in the context of templated vanadates and vanadium tellurites.  The use of asymmetric building units can often result in the formation of novel noncentrosymmetric materials.  However, the importance of asymmetry in the bonding networks between building units is underscored, in an attempt to suppress anti-alignment of local distortions or dipole moments, both of which are required for crystallization into polar structures.  Specific examples include the use of (R)-3-aminopiperadine and (S)-3-aminopiperadine in the synthesis of [(R)-C5H14N2][VO3]2  and [(S)-C5H14N2][VO3]2 , and the use of (R)-3-aminoquinuclidine and (R)-3-aminoquinuclidine in [(R)-C7H16N2][V2Te2O10] and [(S)-C7H16N2][V2Te2O10].  The structures of these organic amines in these examples demonstrates the utility of asymmetric bonding preferences in the formation of new polar materials.
