Diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) possess crystals structures that can be derived from the cubic or hexagonal form of diamond.  Potential compositions and chemical structures for new DLSs can be postulated using simple valence electron principles and Pauling's rules. The multi-cation DLSs reported here were prepared by high-temperature solid-state synthesis, polychalcogenide flux synthesis, as well as iodine vapor transport reactions. Due to their compositional flexibility, multi-cation DLSs provide an excellent opportunity for physical property tuning. This talk will provide examples of multi-cation DLSs with potentially useful properties and demonstrate how careful study of crystal and electronic structure can be used in some cases to understand and tune the physciochemical properties of these materials.
