Materials with layered structures have given us important examples of collective behavior including superconductivity over a wide temperature range, from a few K up to 150K, and moving charge density waves. Layered structures have inherent flexibility and chemical tenability that allows the optimization of the physical properties. Superconductors with simple layer structures, such as intercalated NbSe2 , MgB2, FeSe, and intercalated graphite, as well assuperconductors with more complex layered structures will be discussed. Other important phenomena displayed in layered phases including some reduced alkali molybdenum oxides, or molybdenum bronzes are metal-insulator transitions and charge density wave transitions.  This talk will review some of the important classes of these important materials, explore strategies aimed at the creation of new classes of layered materials, and discuss new compounds recently investigated.
