Since 1991, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted significant attention because of their remarkable mechanical, electronic, and optical properties. Structurally uniform CNTs are expected to exhibit special properties that will allow their use in innovative applications. The need for homogeneous samples of CNTs has stimulated chemists to envision a new production strategy involving the controlled elongation of a small hydrocarbon template, such as a hemispherical nanotube end-cap, prepared by bottom-up chemical synthesis. Toward that objective, the end-cap of a [5,5] CNT has now been synthesized by stepwise chemical methods.For more than a century, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been one of the most intensively investigated classes of compounds. Monolayer graphene is a two-dimensional material with fascinating electrical and optical properties that has brought great possibilities and challenges to chemists. Recently, we have developed a two-steps route from corannulene to a special graphene segment that incorporates an unprecedented five 7-membered rings.
