The synthesis of nocardiolactone, a trans-�-lactone shown to have activity against gram-positive bacteria, is reported. Key steps include cross-metathesis and diastereoslective reduction. This versatile methodology will be extended to the preparation of related �-lactones, some of which have been shown to be inhibitors of fatty acid synthase.
