Conjugated polymers are a class of soft materials under intensive research and have found widespread applications in modern electronic applications. Polyacetylene (PA) is the simplest conjugated polymer with a linear polyene backbone but is intrinsically insoluble and non-processable. Current research on PAs has been focused on the preparation of soluble substituted PAs with, however, little attention paid to structural variation and fine-tuning electronic properties. We have developed a facile methodology for the synthesis of soluble PAs with novel substitution patterns through acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET). PAs obtained from our method have novel solid state structures through precisely placed substituents on every other double bond along the backbone, which is not possible using previously established methods. The nature of the substituents are easily modified and the electronic properties of resulting PAs can be customized and fine-tuned to meet specific requirements for different applications.
