John Lennon once famously remarked that 'life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans'.  This has always resonated with me since I began college as a language major but ended as a chemistry major.  In graduate school, I started research on liquid crystals but then discovered that I was more excited by computational chemistry than wet chemistry.  These incremental path changes ultimately led to a successful career in the structure-based design of pharmaceuticals.  Along the way, I have been fortunate to be part of the development of one of the earliest HIV protease inhibitors, Crixivan, as well as four current clinical candidates (Vaniprevir, MK-5172, MK-6325 and MK-2748) for the treatment of Hepatitis C.
