The influence of 2D morphology of the active phase of sulfide catalysts on selective hydrodesulfurization of FCC gasoline is experimentally investigated. According to DFT calculations, several sulfidation were performed on Mo type catalysts to manage various shapes of MoS2 nanoplatelets. For each sulfidation, different proportions of the two type of active sites located on M and S-edges of the particles were therefore obtained. The evaluation of the catalytic performances of these catalysts on a model FCC gasoline feed exhibited an influence of the sulfur coverage of the edge on hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrogenation (HYD) activities. Moreover, the improvement of the HDS/HYD selectivity appeared directly linked to the proportion of M-edge exposed. As a first experimental evidence of the 2D morphology-reactivity relationship on industrial type catalysts, this work looks towards new insights on the development of future hydrotreating catalysts.
