In order to enhance the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) performance, pre-separation of the nitrogen compounds from Kuwait straight-run gasoil (SRGO) and light cyclic oil (LCO) was conducted by both adsorption and extraction, and its effect on subsequent HDS was examined in a batch reactor and a fixed-bed flow reactor. The results show that the extractive denitrogenation with H2SO4 solution is able to remove up to 64 % of the total N content in the SRGO, but difficult to remove other remained 36 % of the N content. Activated carbon, especially the oxidation-modified activated carbon, is able to remove almost all nitrogen compounds from SRGO and LCO. The pre-denitrogenation significantly enhances the HDS performance of SRGO and LCO, thus it is promising for production of the ultraclean fuels with less increase in the operational cost.
