The study of surfaces under realistic operating conditions is of great importance in heterogeneous catalysis, energy research, and environmental science.  In this talk we will present examples of the application of ambient pressure XPS to the study of oxides under humid conditions, the reaction of model soot surfaces with ozone and hydroxyl radicals, and the correlation of chemical reactivity and electrical potentials on fuel cell surfaces.
