Metal-pnictide and metal-chalcogenide based magnetocaloric materials and superconducting compounds have been prepared through chemical route, distinguished from the conventional metallurgical methods. Starting from the metal halides and pnictogen (chalcogen) elements as reactants, pnictide and chalcogenide compounds could be easily obtained not only in energy- and time-saving way but also with chemical homogeneity, where a reductive metal (ex., Mg, Ca) acts as a reaction mediating agent. Upon combination of metal-halides and pnictogen or chalcogen elements, a facile reaction path could be guaranteed due to the low atomic diffusion barrier and the flux-effect of in-situ generated alkaline earth halides. In the presentation, mechanism studies of material preparation and physic-chemical properties will be described. A new synthetic approach may expedite the exploration of functional metal-pnictide and metal-chacogenide compounds as well as practical applications of these materials through easy scale-up process.
