Photophysical studies of platinum complexes are important for understanding structure-property relationship and exploring applications in organic light emitting diodes, dye sensitized solar cells, nonlinear absorption, etc. In our previous studies, platinum complexes are demonstrated as good nonlinear absorbing materials. Herein, the synthesis, characterization, photophysics, and nonlinear absorptions of a series of platinum complexes containing 6-[7-R-9,9-di(2-ethylhexyl)-9H-fluoren-2-yl]-2,2'-bipyridinyl ligand are reported. Electron withdrawing or donating groups are introduced at the 7-position of the fluorene unit to adjust the ground- and excited-state properties. Systematical electronic absorption and emission studies revealed that the lowest singlet and triplet excited states admixed MLCT, ILCT and LLCT characters, and the degree of mixing varied with different substituents. All the complexes showed broad-band triplet excited-state absorption in the visible to the near-IR region and strong nonlinear transmission for ns laser pulses at 532 nm. TD-DFT calculations were carried out to understand the nature of the lowest excited state.
