A novel process for the production hydrogen from a bitumen emulsion was developed.  Such a process produces a high quality liquid with API gravity that meets pipeline transport without the need of adding expensive diluents.  The key to the process is the activation of the water in the bitumen emulsion with a nano Mo catalyst resulting in the demulsification and separation of the water from the bitumen and the production of in situ hydrogen upgrading.  The bitumen was upgraded to a lighter and sweeter crude oil with a lower sulfur content and essentially no metals.  The activity of the in situ hydrogen was found to be higher than the externally supplied molecular hydtrogen.
