Modular frameworks incorporating inorganic building blocks is an important field of research because 'active sites' can be engineered to respond to guest inclusion initiating highly specific chemical reactions that switch the overall nature of the framework, and may even be developed to facilitate directed chemical reactions similar to those found in enzymatic systems. To achieve this degree of sophistication requires control of the framework assembly as precisely as in metal organic frameworks, combined with the stability and functionality of inorganic zeolites and related systems.  In this contribution we describe how to construct framework materials using polyoxometalate-based building blocks giving a range of so called 'POMZites' that show intrinsically new functionality e.g. SC-SC redox switching, catalytic abilities, and controllable pore size.  I also discuss how cation-exchange reactions can be used to direct the assembly of such materials beyond the nanoscale showing extraordinary emergent properties.
