The use of Low Dosage Hydrate Inhibitors (LDHIs) is one of the optimum methods to control gas hydrate formation issues and provide flow assurance in offshore gas production systems. The application of this technology has several advantages to operators including providing the opportunity for significant cost savings and extending the life of gas systems. The applicability of LDHIs geographically can be dependent on the environmental classification of the products. This paper will focus on the environmental legislations of the North Sea (in particular the UK sector) and the ability of experimental LDHIs to not only successfully inhibit hydrate formation under simulated lab conditions but to also meet the environmental legislations.
