Extending the operational field range of DMS/FAIMS benefits understanding of ion transport phenomena and ion chemistry in general.  Ultra-High field (>200Td) operation is nonetheless challenging because of the complexities associated with asymmetric waveform driver design.   The challenge may be relaxed through the use of micron-scale ion separation channels.  However, these separation channels must themselves be designed with careful attention to ion transmission models in order to effectively trade off peak resolving power (selectivity) and ion transmission efficiency (sensitivity).  This paper re-assesses DMS/FAIMS ion transmission models and presents an ion separator design, together with supporting experimental data, that validates predicted improvements.  The paper will also draw attention to observed deviations from traditional DMS/FAIMS models, when performing separations at Ultra-high Fields.
