A series of paddlewheel complexes composed of thiophene, bithiophene, or terthiophene carboxylate ligands coordinated to a quadruply-bonded dimolybdenum center have been synthesized.  These complexes exhibit intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions that extend further into the visible region as the number of thiophene rings is increased.  The excited state properties were investigated using ultrafast spectroscopic techniques, including femtosecond transient absorption (TA) and time-resolved infrared (TRIR).  TRIR was particularly useful for monitoring excited state C=C vibrations when an ethynyl unit was inserted between the thiophene rings.  The shift of this band from the ground state can be used as a measure of the electron density covering the chromophore and provides insight into the extent of delocalization over the ligands following excitation.
