Mixed valence chemistry has a long history of looking at through-bond electron transfer between inorganic or organic species.  In the vast majority of cases, the species bridging the two redox centers are small conjugated organic molecules.  Thus, we know much about how organic molecules move charge.  Comparatively little is know about how charge moves through pathways that do not involve bonds (through space) or through pathways that involve metal centers (through metal).  Here we present preliminary work in which we examine these two cases and comment on what we can learn from adopting a mixed valence approach to understanding the movement of charge through space and metal centers.
