Transition metal complexes containing multiple metal centers are of interest in solar energy conversion schemes. Ruthenium and iridium complexes with 1, 2, 3 and 4 metal centers were synthesized as was a bimetallic complex containing one of each metal center.  Electrochemical analyses, including collection experiments at a rotating ring-disc electrode were carried out in order to investigate the efficiency of heterogeneous electron transfer when there is significant distance between the redox center and the working electrode. Results will be presented showing that the electrochemical collection efficiency decreased dramatically as more metal centers were added to the molecules. These complexes were also used as photosensitizers for the reduction of water to hydrogen.  The data collected will address the issue of whether (and how) macromolecular photosensitizers containing multiple transition metal centers may behave differently from their single metal center counterparts.
