Reaction between two equivalents of tropolonate and [NEt4][W(CO)4(I)3] yield W(CO)3(trop)2.  This bis-tropolonate complex will proceed to react with alkynes, nitriles, and ketones to lose two COs and form 4-electron donor complexes with the ligands bound in an ?2-fashion.  These complexes have been characterized by NMR and X-ray crystallography.  The ?2 coordinated nitriles and ketones are labile and studies on their ligand exchange reactions will be reported.  These tropolonate complexes oxidize rapidly in air to form tungsten oxo analogs.  Analogous species of molybdenum with tropolonate and acetylacetonate ligands have been synthesized.  The reactivity of the tungsten and molybdenum species as well as the tropolonate and acetylacetonate ligands will be compared.
