Progress toward the total synthesis of coerulescine and horsfiline from known oxindoles is reported here.  These natural products serve as model systems to more complicated oxindole based natural products which have significant biological activity.  The route under investigation consists of just six steps to the target compounds utilizing a key base promoted intramolecular cyclization.  This route is one of the most concise routes to both natural products and avoids the use of expensive reagents.
