b-keto-esters provide a versatile building block for a range of heterocyclic templates.  There are a variety of synthetic methods available to access these functional intermediates depending on the supply of available precursors.  We will discuss these orthogonal approaches to the preparation of b-keto-esters utilizing robust chemistry and highlight the discovery of a facile Pd-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck coupling to prepare customized b-keto-esters from aryl and heteroaryl halides to access highly functionalized substrates.
