Although the recourse to microwave irradiation is now common in organic synthesis, reports describing the use of this technique for preparative applications in organometallic chemistry are still scarce. In this communication, we shall disclose recent work from our laboratory showing that microwave heating provides a straighforward access to mono and bimetallic ruthenium-vinylidene complexes via arene displacement reactions from the [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2 dimer. Application of these complexes in microwave-assisted ruthenium-catalyzed reactions will also be presented.
