Here, we report multilayer polyzwitterion coatings from ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) chemistry to resist protein adsorption.  Hydrophilic oxanorbornene-based sulfobetaine and carboxybetaine monomers, as well as 'dual-functional' betaines were studied.  Copolymerizing the zwitterionic monomers with a siloxane-containing norbornene monomer resulted in polymers containing a synthetic handle for facile surface modification. Both siloxane content and side chain functionality were found to significantly influence surface properties.  The oligo(ethylene oxide)- and fluorine-modified dual-functional surfaces showed the best nonspecific protein resistance with GFibrinogen = 0.04 ng/mm2.
