Norbornene polymers have found extensive use in biomedical applications.  5-norbornene-2-ethyl ester was polymerized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization to yield polymers with molecular weights ranging from 5,000 g/mol to a very high molecular weight of 5,000,000 g/mol.  Both the backbones and side-chains were modified, and the resulting polymers were characterized by NMR, GPC, DSC, and TGA.  Films cast of selected polymers were analyzed for their rheological properties.  Finally, cell viability studies were performed as a first step in assessing these materials for use in biomedical applications.
