The International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Office of Safeguards Analytical Services (SGAS) is tasked with providing high quality analytical results and sample handling logistics for samples taken during in-field verification activities. SGAS is comprised of a multinational team of professional and technical staff from a wide variety of disciplines, including radiochemistry, mass spectrometry, physics, and quality management. Analytical methods which are used in the analysis of samples include TIMS, SIMS, SEM, radiometric, and bulk chemical analysis; samples range from environmental cotton swipes to spent nuclear fuel. This presentation will provide an overview of the work which SGAS performs and the challenges it faces, as well as provide a view of what it is like working in an international, multicultural organization.
