A capillary electrophoresis with amperometric detection (CE-AD) method for determining catecholamines and related metabolites in urinary samples has been developed. In particular, six low concentration urinary metabolic marker compounds, namely norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, metanephrine, vanillylmandelic acid and homovanillic acid were determined by CE-AD. Electrophoretic runs were performed in an 80 mmol/L H3BO3-Na2B4O7 running buffer (pH 9.48) at a separation voltage of 16 kV, and the six marker compounds together with the major coexisting interference compound uric acid could be well separated within 24 min.  Highly linear response was obtained for the six markers over three orders of magnitude with detection limits ranging from 1.0 to 5.0 mg/L (S/N=3).  The proposed analytical method is sensitive, selective, accurate and reproducible, providing a promising and convenient entry for monitoring these molecular markers, which could provide useful information for clinical diagnosis of some related diseases.
