Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a technique used to measure major, minor, and trace elements, and isotope ratios in a variety of solid sample types.  The analysis capabilities of LA-ICP-MS are limited by the need for matrix-matched calibration standards due to elemental fractionation, where the laser-generated aerosol has a different composition than the sample.  This work describes the adaptation of a nanosecond laser ablation system to contain a micromotor which rapidly rotates the sample and a standard, quasi-simultaneously ablating and mixing both in the aerosol.  Fusion into glass beads can eliminate any large difference in matrix effects and minimize heterogeneity issues.  It allows the spiked samples to be stable over time and for multiple analyses; especially important when using costly standards for isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS).  Use of this methodology for high precision IDMS measurements will be discussed along with method validation using reference materials.
