In this presentation, we will describe the results of our ongoing efforts in the chemistry of main group Lewis acids as water compatible receptors for fluoride anions. In particular, we will show how cationic boron and antimony derivatives can be used to sense ppm levels of fluoride in tap water. We will also demonstrate how our approach can be applied to the capture of [18F]-fluoride anions in water to produce novel positron emission tomography imaging agents with high specific activities.
