Michelle taught me the basic idea that exploring steric hindrance could have a profound influence on the way that small molecules would behave.  She gave me a lifetime of work to do.  The approach to coordination chemistry has shaped my exploration of and understanding of the chemistry of small molecule mimics of copper-containing enzymes, in the form of substituted copper phenanthroline complexes.  They provide hints as to how biological copper centers function, but never fail to yield surprises as to their basic coordination chemistry, of which Michelle would approve.
