Based on seminal work by Douthwaite and co-workers, a variety of different flexible bidentate N-heterocylic carbene ligands with amine linkers have been synthesized. In this presentation the coordination of these ligands to a range of different transition metals will be described. The ligands coordinate to Pd to form species with a relatively unusual trans-spanning bidentate NHC ligand, whereas axially chiral dimeric complexes are formed when the ligand binds to Ir and Rh. Reaction of the ligand with monomeric Fe precursors results in the formation of paramagnetic tetrahedral Fe(II) species. The electronic structure and properties of all of the complexes will be discussed, along with catalytic applications.
