The catalytic activity of platinum group metals and their use for removing hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxides from automotive exhaust streams are well known, as is their tendency to sinter under realistic operating temperatures.  A core@shell morphology may limit metal sintering while porosity engineered into the shell would allow egress of reactants.  We have been able to synthesize such a porous shell around a PGM nanoparticle and test its performance as a three-way catalyst.
