New families of metallic and bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts supported on graphene nanosheets have been developed for several heterogeneous catalysis applications. In one approach, a microwave irradiation (MWI)-chemical reduction method is used for the simultaneous reduction of metal ions and graphene oxide (GO) to produce well-dispersed nanoparticle catalysts supported on the defect sites of graphene. In another approach, pulsed laser irradiation of a solution of GO and metal ions is used for the synthesis of the nanocatalysts supported on partially reduced GO. The application of graphene as a high surface area support for Pd nanoparticle catalysts for carbon-carbon cross coupling reactions will be presented. We will also present the first application Fe and Co catalysts supported on graphene for the Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS). The exceptional activity and stability of the FTS-graphene catalysts and the development of other novel metallic and bimetallic catalysts supported on graphene will be presented and discussed.
