Even when international activities should be going smoothly, Mother Nature, terrorists, government red tape and other myopic interferences can find ways to disrupt your plans.  Experiences include numerous conferences and joint research projects in Eastern Europe while under Soviet control.  These may provide useful insights to anyone who ventures into scientific interactions in countries whose governments are considered unfriendly to ours. Other international conferences in Europe and Asia and sabbaticals in Denmark and Austria also led to enlightenment regarding the societal and professional variations that occur from country to country.
