Characterization of the performance of a batch, direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) employing molten sodium hydroxide electrolyte, a �tea-bag� anode and a �double tube� cathode is presented. Some advantages of this system include minimization of oxygen crossover to the anode from the cathode and elimination of the need for a ceramic membrane separator, resulting in high open-circuit potential and peak power and current densities at low temperatures (ca. 550�C), as well as stable operation for over 100h. It is demonstrated that this system can produce stable power at various different constant currents from 200 to 500 mA.
