Bunker fuels used in the marine industry tend to have high sulfur content and undesirable emission properties. Transitioning from bunker fuels to fuels with a lower environmental impact poses many technical and economic challenges to the shipping industry. The blending of glycerol with low sulfur diesel fuel via sonication has been used to create a class of fuels with acceptable mechanical, economic, and environmental properties. The blending methods and an emissions test platform used to evaluate these fuels will be described. This project is a collaboration of the Maine Maritime Academy and a private commercialized company.  The glycerol-diesel fuels developed from this project are collectively known as the �Bunker GreenTM� fuels. The fuel blends were tested on a single-cylinder diesel engine. In these trials a reduction by as much as 17% on a g/(kWh) basis of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions was observed.
