The pressure/temperature conditions for uptake and release of hydrogen into and from complex metal hydrides is too high for on-board applications, requiring the incorporation of catalysts. In contrast, molecular hydrogen easily adsorbs into nanoporous (e.g. metal organic framework) materials but the binding energies are too low to meet the required volumetric densities. Using spectroscopic techniques, the fundamental issues associated with catalyst incorporation in aluminum and molecular hydrogen binding in MOF have been investigated. Evidence for H2 dissociation and spill over on lightly Ti-doped Al surfaces is presented, using CO co-adsorption as a marker in IR absorption studies, shedding light on the nature of the catalysts centers. The adsorption sites (and H2-H2 interactions) in both saturated and unsaturated metal center MOFs and the corresponding perturbation of MOF hosts are also derived from IR absorption studies.
