There is considerable interest in the production of fuels from non-food sources such as corn stover, switchgrass, and woody biomass.  Fermentation of these lignocellulosic feedstocks leaves a residue enriched in lignin and ash.  This residue can potentially be used as a gasification feedstock for production of syngas.  The properties of this material are different from more conventional feedstocks, leading to problems with feeding and bed agglomeration.  This research investigates the gasification of a high lignin residue produced form the bioconversion of corn stover.  The use of cooling nitrogen co-fed with a pelletized feedstock can resolve feed line plugging, but bed agglomeration is still problematic.  Tar generation incrases from 18.6g/Nm3 in untreated corn stover to 50.3g/Nm3 in the high lignin residue.  Char formation also increases from 1.0wt% in the reactor to 16.9wt%, and from 28.6% in the filter residue to 31.1wt%.  Syngas volumes produced decrease to 70% of the untreated values.
