The electron transfer reagent SmI2 has emerged as one of the most important reducing agents available in the laboratory. The reagent's incredible selectivity ensures that it is the reagent of choice for the orchestration of complexity-generating, reductive cascades.We will discuss studies on the development and exploitation of SmI2-mediated cascade reactions that harness new processes and reactive intermediates. An application in a cascade approach to the antibacterial natural product pleuromutilin will be described.
