Oxidative processing of soluble atmospheric organics is a potential mechanism that leads to oxygenated, low volatility aerosol organics.   This processing will occur in cloudwater but may also take place within aerosol particles.   This talk will focus on our recent research in this area, in which new on-line mass spectrometry techniques has been used to augment past studies.  Results will be presented for the OH oxidation of glyoxal, methylglyoxal and cis-pinonic acid using atomization, followed by aerosol mass spectrometry and/or aerosol-volatilization CIMS.  Quantitative characterization of reactants and products is demonstrated, and a class of aqueous phase species not previously identified, i.e. hydroxyhydroperoxides arising from the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with aldehydes, was observed.  We have applied similar oxidation techniques to cloudwater organics and the aqueous component of PM1 from a biogenic environment.   The results from lab and field studies will be compared, and atmospheric implications discussed.
